How to Make a Herringbone Quilt

My daughter really wanted to make a quilt for her mother-in-law this Christmas. She visited for two weeks and was able to finish two quilts!

We searched the internet for easy quilt patterns and she loved this herringbone pattern from Missouri Star. If you are looking for great patterns you should check out her tutorials!

In this tutorial from Missouri Star she had a larger selection of patterns to choose from. When you purchase a jelly roll or a layer cake you have a large selection of patterns and colors. That makes it easier to make a more random pattern overall.

Since we only had 6 colors we had to find a way to create a pattern. This was the hardest part. We tried laying out the colors randomly but it wasn't looking right.

Then we tried to make a numeric pattern where we had each row in a different order and offsetting it by 1, 2, and then 3. That still wasn't working.

Finally, we put the 6 colors in the order we liked for the first row. Then we continued the pattern for 2 more on the first row (8) and started the second row where the first row ended off.

I think it turned out great! Here's an easier way to visualize the pattern we came up with.

1 | 3 | 5 | 1 | 3 |
2 | 4 | 6 | 2 | 4 |
3 | 5 | 1 | 3 | 5 |
4 | 6 | 2 | 4 | 6 |
5 | 1 | 3 | 5 | 1 |
6 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 2 |
1 | 3 | 5 | 1 | 3 |
2 | 4 | 6 | 2 | 4 |

Doing this allowed for the pattern to also repeat diagonally. And it was just by chance the colors that repeated diagonally.

Her mother-in-law knew she was making one quilt for her sister-in-law but had no idea she was getting one too!
